Mass-produced Wheelchair (Wheelchair Reference Pack)

$0.00

This wheelchair is mass-produced to be as cheap and as close to “one-size fits all” as it’s possible to be, though this comes at the expense of manoeuvrability and comfort. If you’ve ever been injured, this is similar to the kind of wheelchair you’d have likely used.

Comes with:

  • a .blend (Blender file) file containing basic materials (shaders) that can be edited

  • an .obj and .mtl file, which can be imported directly into Clip Studio Paint or other 3D modelling programs

  • A link to the instruction manual which includes guides on how to do things like change the colour of the frame in blender, import the files into Clip Studio Paint and more.

What kind of character would this wheelchair suit?

This type of wheelchair, sometimes called mass-produced or hospital wheelchairs are what you most often see in media.
They are built for no individual person, but instead, to be usable by the widest range of people, which is why, if you've ever been given a wheelchair while in hospital, it was probably one of these. You'll also be able to find them in stores as something you can purchase, usually for relatively cheap for this reason as well. They are mostly designed to be a temporary option, but due to circumstances, they may be all someone is able to access. Most often, the reason for this is cost. Hospital wheelchairs cost about $50 - $200 (AUD) whereas the thre other wheelchairs in this pack range in price from about $2,000 - $20,000 (AUD). Obviously, if money is tight, a hospital chair is the way to go. Though it's important to remember that in many countries, the cost of more expensive wheelchairs is entirely covered or subsidised by government programs, whereas in the US, without insurance, the person will have to cover the cost of the wheelchair themselves, leading to hospital chairs being more common in those parts of the world.

Hospital wheelchairs can be a good option for a variety of people, such as:

  • those who, on top of having low income, might have disability that isn't covered by insurance or their country's government support program.

  • who only need a wheelchair on occasion, such as some ambulatory wheelchair users and elderly folks

  • people who need a lot of extra medical equipment that is easier to attach to hospital wheelchairs

  • people who's disabilities are rapidly changing and therefore they don't know what their needs are yet

  • people who don't have a lot of space in their home or car to transport these wheelchairs, as they are easily foldable for storage.

You will often hear people online say not to give your character a hospital wheelchair at all, but the problem is not the kind of wheelchair, just that it doesn't suit the character being depicted. It will be the best option for some characters, just make sure you do your research to see if it's the best fit for yours!
